ASPIRE360 Round Britain Challenge

A life-changing circumnavigation of the UK under sail!

A Life Changing Opportunity

A fantastic opportunity for ten young people aged between 14 & 18 to experience the United Kingdom in a way few others have, by sea. ASPIRE360 is a major circumnavigation of the UK, sailing over 1945 nautical miles!

Young people do not need any previous sailing experience as the staff on board (called Afterguard) will teach them everything they need to know. They will meet new people and work together to set sails, steer, keep watch and cook.

The 1945-mile voyage will have many benefits and will use our youth scheme to encourage and develop young people across a range of outcomes. Young people will see the direct achievements of working, living and communicating as a team and develop the skills they need to become self-aware, self-confident, and resilient adults. The unique environment of an offshore sailing yacht is the best place for a person to learn about themselves, other people, and the world they live. On a small boat at sea, participants have no choice but to live and work together, communicate, overcome difficulty, and take responsibility.

ASPIRE360 will depart again from Fowey on the 3rd of April 2023 and sail in a west-about direction around the UK. The route will visit 20 unique ports in the UK and Ireland, with events and educational visits planned throughout.

Young people will swap the comforts of home for single bunks, a moving deck and having to learn how to cook, clean and look after each other as they get used to their new home.

ASPIRE360 is an Expedition class voyage, and as such, the sailing consists of much longer legs between ports. Quite often, we’ll be at sea for over 24hrs with some legs over 40hrs! Young people taking part will be divided into two equal watches, which allows the boat to sail continually whilst allowing everyone enough sleep.

It will be a challenge to see them battle strong winds, freezing temperatures and rough seas throughout the trip, as well as marvelling at our beautiful coastline under sun-drenched skies.

It will be a feat of pure physical, mental, emotional and academic endurance, but one which will change young people forever.

They will make strong bonds with their crewmates, increase their understanding of themselves and their boundaries and most importantly, have the confidence that they can try and excel at anything!

Frequently Asked Questions

We've compiled a few of our most frequently asked questions regarding ASPIRE360, if your question hasn't been answered please do get in touch.

We expect ASPIRE360 to be oversubscribed, and as such, we have to select the participants based on those who we feel will get the most from the experience.

We will shortlist applicants in two stages. The first will be via questions asked on the Passenger Declaration form. The second, if necessary, will be via an activity day provisionally booked for the 18th of February.

The additional questions should be completed by the young person taking part and will be:

  1. Share an experience you had in dealing with a difficult person and how you handled the situation.
  2. Share with us why you think you'll make a good crew member. What qualities do you bring?
  3. Share an example of when you set yourself a personally challenging goal. What helped you succeed?

We will be closing applications on the 31st January 2023.

We will be closing applications on the 31st January 2023 and shortlisting very shortly afterward. We hope to let everyone know if they have been successful the week commencing 6th of February 2023.

If necessary we will be holding an activity day (provisionally) booked for the 18th of February to select the final 10 young people. This will be in/about the Fowey area and is yet to be confirmed, we will keep all applicants up to date with plans

We believe that all young people should have the opportunity to participate in a transformational voyage with us. The voyage fee we are passing on to participants is significantly less than the actual cost to the organisation.

The voyage fee that is payable is currently £1650. We anticipate this figure to be reduced as we fundraise, seek sponsorship, and apply for grants. As we raise funds we will reduce the voyage fee appropriately.

Each selected participant will be required to travel to Fowey, to undertake a group fundraising activity, this will be sometime in late February / early March.
