Press Release

A group of 10 young people aged 14 to 18 will set sail on an epic journey around the United Kingdom in April. The team, which includes both experienced adult sailors and young trainees, will be navigating the waters of the UK for six weeks, visiting ports and landmarks along the way. This ambitious voyage is not just about sailing but also about personal development, self-discovery, and empowerment through Sail Training.

The journey, which will begin on April 1st, will take the sailors through some of the most beautiful and challenging waters in the UK, including the treacherous North Sea and the picturesque coastlines of Scotland and Wales. Along the way, the team will have educational opportunities to learn about how the sea has shaped our country. They will visit iconic museums such as the Titanic Museum in Belfast, the Royal Yacht Britannia in Edinburgh and Greenwich Maritime Museum in London.

The Sail Training program provides the participants with opportunities to improve resilience, self-belief, communication skills and much more. The experience of living and working together on a large yacht in a challenging and dynamic environment will help the young sailors to develop essential life skills and a greater understanding of themselves and the world around them.

The team is supported by local partners such as Fowey Harbour, who are funding a place aboard to help improve youth participation in sailing. The partnership will allow more young people to participate in this life-changing program and gain the skills and confidence needed to pursue their passions and achieve their goals.

Captain Paul Thomas, Fowey Harbour Master: “Fowey Harbour are pleased to support this fantastic opportunity for young people in our local communities. This voyage, and the other experiences which Morvargh offers, gives an opportunity for young people from all backgrounds to experience sailing and the health and wellbeing benefits that being ‘on the water’ brings. We hope that it helps to nurture the next generation of leisure and competitive sailors in our community and maybe even some that go on to choose a career in the maritime sector.”

#ASPIRE360 has also inspired Fowey Gallants Sailing Club members who recently raised over £2100 to sponsor a place aboard for a young sailor. Honorary Secretary - Gary Barr:

“Established in 1947, Fowey Gallants Sailing Club’s original aim was to encourage young boys and girls to sail, so it is natural for us to want to help a young person participate in Morvargh’s ASPIRE360 voyage. Our sponsorship will support a young person who otherwise would not be able to afford the voyage fee, and we can’t thank our members and their friends & family who generously donated. We are excited to follow their adventures.”

"We are excited to embark on this journey and look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead," said Morvargh Sailing Projects Director Matthew Barraud. "Not only will the young people be joining a small group who have sailed around the UK, but we will also be learning about the history and culture of the UK. We are grateful for the support of our local partners, who are helping to make this dream a reality for the young sailors."

The team will document their journey on social media and their website, offering a unique look at the UK from a sailors' perspective. The public is encouraged to follow the team's progress and the young sailors’ personal journeys.

The team will depart on April the 2nd at 1100 with a pre-departure event for parents, sponsors and partners being held at the Royal Fowey Yacht Club on the 1st of April, followed by a welcome back party & celebration of their achievement planned for their return at the Fowey Gallants Sailing Club.

Applications for the voyage are still open.
