I am very pleased to announce that we will be launching Morvargh Sailing Project on Sunday 2nd April 2017!

It's certainly been a long road to get to this point but as you can imagine we're very excited to be delivering sail training voyages from Plymouth again. Although the details aren't yet complete we're planning some very exciting events in the lead up to our relaunch in April, from a re-dedication ceremony, to Helen Mary R's 30th birthday celebration, to a voyage around Britain!

The journey we've taken to get here has been a long one; in 2013 we discovered that Helen Mary R’s standing rigging needed to be replaced. At that point we had only been operating for two years and so didn’t have the reserves in place to pay for the rigging. The cost was quoted as between £10k & £12k! As you can imagine we then had to make the very difficult decision to suspend operations as Helen Mary R lost her coding certificate.

This started a personal journey of ups & downs as Morvargh is very much a family based social enterprise and we had invested everything we had to get it started. During these dark days, the bank pulled support for the Project and we had to sell a house to pay back the bank loan and reluctantly put Helen Mary R up for sale. What followed was a year of massive uncertainty and mounting debts. We made Morvargh Sailing Project a dormant organisation and scrabbled to find work where we could to keep the wolf from the door and hold on to Helen Mary R.

Thankfully we managed to keep Helen Mary R and slowly pull in the funds we needed to replace her rigging. Last month we managed to raise enough to book the rigging replacement with Hemisphere Rigging which was a momentous occasion!

We truly couldn't have got this far without our family, friends and acquaintances who have donated money, dedicated time, and kept us going with kind words & encouragement. Thank you all!

As I mentioned at the top of this post we are planning the relaunch on Sunday 2nd April 2017. Our initial plans will see us holding a re-dedication ceremony aboard Helen Mary R in Sutton Harbour. The ceremony will see HMR christened for a second time, with a little champagne poured over the prow, a little for Neptune and a quick speech. We will then progress into Helen Mary R's 30th birthday celebration with a cake and a chance for people to look round Plymouths Tall Ship. Also present will be the intrepid crew who will sail Helen Mary R around Great Britain a few days later!

There is obviously a lot of work to do to get us ready for the 2nd April and still some funds to raise but there is definitely a buzz in the air aboard as we tick of the jobs on the list and get closer to the relaunch. If you can spare time to help in the refit please do get in touch!

If you'd like to follow our adventures please join our mailing list if you haven't already done so. We'll be writing some newsletters and blog posts over the upcoming months and it would be great if you would all share our journey.
