What sailing trips are right for me?

Find your perfect sailing voyage for 2022. Find out about our different types of sailing trip.

Whether you are looking for yourself or your child, choosing the suitable sailing adventure for you or them is essential.

To help you decide which sailing trip is best, we have added a category to each sailing voyage to give a better idea of what's involved aboard. It is vital that you understand what these ratings mean and that you have selected an appropriate trip for you or your child.

Whichever voyage you choose, mother nature and the ocean always make life interesting, and we are entirely dependent on what conditions we find at the time. We carefully plan the routes and timings to work with the prevailing winds and allow plenty of time to see and do everything we'd like to do en route.

A sail training voyage is not your regular sailing holiday, we have to get from A to B within a given time, and we all need to work together to cook, clean and navigate! If conditions are kind, we will have plenty of time to stop and explore, but if we get storm-bound, we may need to head to sea for a few days to make up time. This is the reality of tall ship sailing and expeditions in more extreme areas.

Whatever the conditions, we will ensure lots of fun, laughter, camaraderie and hands-on sailing throughout!

Voyage Classifications

We organise our voyages into different classifications, these are shown below.

Explorer Voyages

Explorer Voyages have low mileage for the time allotted and are almost entirely coastal and day sailing in nature. There may be an overnight sail or a day when you head further offshore, but most of the time, you will be close to the coast and have plenty of time to explore ashore. These will be an ideal entry point if you are entirely new to sailing or nervous about your capabilities.

  • Suitable for ages 11+
  • Residential, up to 3 nights

Adventure Voyages

Our Adventure sailing trips cover much greater mileage than an explorer trip. Head to sea, sail for a few days or nights and get into life on board an ocean-going yacht. We aim to allow a good bit of time to head ashore and explore, but as distances increase, so does our reliance on weather windows & conditions. Adventure sailing trips are great intermediaries between explorers and expeditions.

  • Suitable for ages 14+
  • Residential, between 7 & 10 nights

Expedition Voyages

These trips sail off the beaten track & into the wild. Facilities will be limited, and we can make few promises about what to expect. A true adventure, so if you want hot showers and need creature comforts on tap, these are not for you. You will love our sailing expeditions if you get excited by heading to remote sailing grounds. Please don’t ask us what comes next because we don’t know either!

  • Suitable for ages 14+
  • Residential, 4 weeks+

Races & Tall Ships

Nothing can quite prepare you for the unforgettable atmosphere of racing. Picture yourself sailing on a beautiful Tall Ship, way out at sea, with the waves crashing against the hull, no land in sight, the sun rising behind you, and your closest competitor hot on your heels. Most Races and Regattas are split into “legs,” or races. We also enter local regattas and races a little shorter in length.

  • Suitable for all ages
  • Day & Residenital

Experience Sailing Days

Create memories that last a lifetime, join us aboard for a hands-on sailing holiday or day voyage. Trips with an experience rating have low mileage and are normally short coastal hops or just within St Austell Bay. All of our voyages are ‘hands-on’ that merge traditional seamanship on a modern vessel. You can relax and enjoy the grace, seaworthiness and character that makes Helen Mary R unique.

  • Open to all
  • Day Trips

Holiday Activities

Our activity days are run through the school holidays and are a fantastic way to get involved with sailing without committing to a full residential voyage. Sessions are from 10-5 pm, participants will get involved with all aspects of sailing our vessel along with getting the chance to have a swim after lunch. Most of the sailing is in St Austell bay and surrounding areas.

  • Suitable for ages 11+
  • Day & Residentials
