#sailNL Expedition Netherlands

A 37-day, 1200-mile voyage visiting the UK, Belgium, Netherlands and France, for young people aged 14+ - A life-changing opportunity

A Life Changing Opportunity

Are you ready to embark on an extraordinary adventure? Morvargh Sailing Project has launched #sailNL Expedition Netherlands, a 37-day, 1200-mile voyage visiting the UK, Belgium, Netherlands and France, for young people aged 14+.

Expedition Netherlands will depart on the 30th of March 2024 and visit 17 amazing, unique ports and locations in the UK and Europe, with educational visits planned throughout.

From the maritime heritage of Cowes to the iconic White Cliffs of Dover, young people will be immersed in history and natural beauty. Sailing both on inland waterways (lots of locks and bridges!), along the English Channel and in the North Sea, young people will experience all that sailing has to offer. We’ll meander through picturesque canals, see historic architecture, and witness modern innovation and cityscapes in Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

Further inland, we’ll visit the world-famous cheese market in Gouda, experience the charm of Medemblik on the Ijsselmeer, and enjoy the beauty of Makkum in Friesland.

Going back offshore, we’ll visit the Friesian Islands, Scheveningen, and Breskens before leaving Dutch waters for Belgium, France and home!

Young people do not need any previous sailing experience as the staff on board (called Afterguard) will teach them everything they need to know. They will meet new people and work together to set sails, steer, keep watch and cook.

Sailing provides unparalleled life lessons. As participants connect sailing with real-life challenges, these character traits develop organically, becoming ingrained in their personalities.

#sailNL Expedition Netherlands is not just a sailing expedition; it's a transformative experience. Our voyages empower young people to build self-confidence, self-esteem, and crucial communication and leadership skills. These character "skills" are highly sought after by employers.

#sailNL Expedition Netherlands is an adventure and an investment in a young person's future.

We provide a safe and supportive space where people can see the direct achievements of working, living and communicating as a team and develop the skills they need to become self-aware, selfconfident, and resilient adults.

#sailNL Expedition Netherlands is an expedition-class voyage. As such, the sailing comprises much longer legs between ports. We can be at sea for up to 48 hours. Young people taking part will be split into two equal watches, which allows the boat to sail continually whilst allowing everyone enough sleep. This traditional watch system will see young people on watch for 4 hours followed by 4 hours off.

By their nature, Expeditions are led by our reliance on weather windows and sea conditions, so often ‘Plan A’ is amended many times over; this is the reality and excitement of expedition sailing.

Take advantage of this opportunity to embark on a journey that will profoundly shape your child's life. Whether an experienced sailor or a complete novice, Expedition Netherlands is a chance for young people to discover the world, themselves, and their boundless potential.

Keeping your children safe

Our vessel is operated under regulations laid down by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and is inspected annually; this inspection - called a ‘coding inspection’, ensures that our boat is kept to the correct standard.

The requirements for vessels in commercial use are contained within MGN-280. The code requires each boat to be assessed for its stability and to undergo a complete, out-of-the-water survey, an in-water survey and a check of its safety equipment before certification.

We are also members of ASTO, the Association of Sail Training Organsiations. As members, we must show we comply with the criteria and fulfil ASTO’s aims to become a member. Amongst the requirements for membership are: Vessel Safety, Staffing, & High Standards.

Our staff and volunteers are recruited for their sailing ability and skills in working with young people. With RYA or MCA qualifications, they are suitably trained to work on board. We carry more than the minimum required staff aboard and operate under a robust Safety Management System.

We use good practice guidelines to ensure the safety and welfare of Trainees (young people) at all times, both on and off the water. All staff and volunteers are vetted and DBS checked before getting involved with the Project.

Also important is keeping in touch with you as parents we have a dedicated parents WhatsApp group which you can use to contact the boat 24hrs a day. On most days we'll send a quick message with our plans and some pictures of our adventures.

We expect #sailNL Expedition Netherlands to be oversubscribed, and as such, we have to select the participants based on those who we feel will get the most from the experience.

We will shortlist applicants in two stages. The first will be via questions asked on the Passenger Declaration form. The second, will be via an activity day on the 3rd of February.

The additional shortlisting questions should be completed by the young person taking part and are:

  2. Describe a challenging situation you've faced in a group setting, and how you contributed to resolving it.
  3. Have you ever participated in outdoor activities or programs that involved teamwork and leadership? If so, please share your experiences and what you learned from them.
  4. How do you handle adversity or unexpected situations when you're outside of your comfort zone? Can you provide an example from your life?
  5. What role do you think you would naturally take on within a team, and why?

We will be closing applications on the 22nd January 2024.

We will be closing applications on the 22nd January 2024 and shortlisting very shortly afterward. We hope to let everyone know if they have been successful very shortly afterward.

We believe that all young people should have the opportunity to participate in a transformational voyage with us. The voyage fee we are passing on to participants is significantly less than the actual cost to the organisation.

The voyage fee that is payable is currently £2000. We anticipate this figure to be reduced as we fundraise, seek sponsorship, and apply for grants. As we raise funds we will reduce the voyage fee appropriately.
