Yesterday I was interviewed by Heart FM, BBC Radio Devon, BBC Radio Cornwall and had a television film crew from the BBC visit Helen Mary R in Sutton Harbour! Certainly not a normal day for me but a huge day for Morvargh Sailing Project.
The reason for this flurry of (and continuing) media attention is our recent launch of ASPIRE360. ASPIRE360 is a fantastic opportunity for eight young people aged between 14 & 18 to experience the United Kingdom in a way few others have, by sea. It is a major circumnavigation of the UK in April, sailing over 1735 nautical miles, visiting 16 amazing ports and 2 countries!
The young people will swap the comforts of home for single bunks, a moving deck, having to learn how to cook, clean and look after each other as they get used to their new home. At 57 feet, and weighing 30tons, our Tall Ship, Helen Mary R is as long as five cars and weighs the equivalent of two double decker busses!
It will be a challenge which will see them battle strong winds, freezing temperatures and rough seas at times throughout the trip; as well as marvelling at our beautiful coastline under sun-drenched skies. It will be a feat of pure physical, mental, emotional and academic endurance, but one which will leave the young people changed forever.
As you can imagine ASPIRE360 is about raising aspirations but also about improving and nurturing the young people aboard so that they improve across a range of outcomes. Importantly, ASPIRE360 is also a way we can build relationships with local and regional businesses. We need commercial support to make ASPIRE360 the event we know it has the potential to be; and, as you can see from just this one day of PR we can offer a sponsor a good return with coverage, as well as a lot of other benefits!
ASPIRE360 will inspire not just the 8 young people onboard but also the wider public. We are visiting 16 ports and 2 countries on the way round the UK and your business has the ability to join this inspirational and aspirational journey! Momentum for ASPIRE360 is building and we have interest from print media too. We’ve already been covered in the major yachting press, such as Classic Sailor, Yachting & Boating World and All at Sea. Local press such as the Plymouth Herald have also featured ASPIRE360.
We have developed a range of packages that your business could get behind to support ASPIRE360. From local ‘Spirit of Discovery’ partners pledging £100 to sponsor us, to larger commitments from bigger organisations we believe there is truly a way your business can get involved and help the aspirations of a generation!
