Charting Our Course: Reflections on 2025 and Our Aspirations for the Year Ahead

Each year aboard Helen Mary R teaches us something new about the potential of young people when they are given space, challenge, and trust. Our 2025 Annual Report brings these stories together; the achievements, the growth, and the collective commitment that shaped our most ambitious year to date. It also sets out the direction we will take as we move towards Helen Mary R’s 40th anniversary and the opportunities that 2026 will bring.

This season was defined by scale and depth. We delivered 80 days at sea and worked with 88 young people from across Cornwall and beyond. Voyages ranged from our 36-day Scotland and Celtic Nations Expedition to school programmes, cultural exchanges, and dedicated Sail Training experiences. Across more than 2,500 miles sailed, young people strengthened their confidence, found their voices, and learnt how to rely on themselves and each other. Their feedback speaks clearly; nine out of ten felt more skilful, more connected, and more empowered by the time they stepped ashore.

Our report also reflects the importance of widening access. A meaningful number of participants came from the most disadvantaged communities, where opportunities for enrichment can be limited. Sail Training gives these young people a new environment in which to grow; a place where teamwork matters, challenges build resilience, and success is shared. It also opens their eyes to marine careers and wider pathways that they may never have considered.

Behind every voyage sits a network of support. Volunteers donated more than 7,600 hours of their time. Local partners offered expertise, venues, equipment, and encouragement. Donors, trusts, and community supporters helped us keep voyages affordable and accessible. Their combined efforts ensured that every mile sailed carried real impact.

Looking forward, our aspirations are clear. We aim to increase our sailing days to 94 in 2026 while continuing to remove financial barriers for families. We will strengthen our partnerships with schools, trusts, and youth organisations to broaden our reach. Above all, we must complete the essential renewal of Helen Mary R through our Preserve the Legacy, Protect the Future campaign so she can continue to be a safe, capable, and inspiring platform for the next generation.

As we prepare for Helen Mary R’s 40th year, we remain guided by a simple belief; that young people thrive when they are given purpose, responsibility, and adventure. The sea offers all three. With continued community support, we can ensure that these opportunities remain open to every young person who needs them.
