We're committed to creating clear, accessible pathways for young people and volunteer Watch Leaders who want to continue developing their sailing skills.
Through our growing training framework, trainees can now work towards recognised RYA qualifications aboard, including Start Yachting and Competent Crew, while those progressing into our Watch Leader framework can achieve the RYA Watch Leader certificate as they take on greater responsibility aboard and develop leadership at sea.
Our partnership with Sailing Course Online plays an important role in supporting that journey. As an RYA Recognised Training Centre based at Hamble Point Marina on the Solent, Sailing Course Online specialises in flexible online shore-based training designed to fit around education, work, and volunteering commitments.
Through the partnership, volunteer Watch Leaders can access discounted RYA Day Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Theory courses, complete with official training materials, chart packs, instructor support, and exam assessment. These qualifications help young sailors move beyond simply taking part aboard and begin developing the navigation, passage planning, weather, and decision-making skills needed to skipper and plan their own voyages.
The courses also reflect the RYA’s modern Digital First navigation approach, introducing students to chartplotters, AIS systems, and other electronic navigation tools widely used aboard modern sailing vessels. Combined with the practical offshore experience gained aboard Helen Mary R, this creates a powerful blend of real-world seamanship and recognised training.
