Preserve the Legacy, Protect the Future

In 2026, Helen Mary R reached a remarkable milestone: 40 YEARS AT SEA.

For four decades, she has carried young people beyond familiar horizons. She has challenged them, supported them, and quietly helped shape confidence, resilience, and self-belief. Thousands of young lives have been influenced by time spent on her decks. Alongside this, she has helped build something equally important: a strong and lasting community of volunteers, supporters, maritime professionals, families, and former trainees connected through shared experiences at sea.

Preserve the Legacy, Protect the Future is our fundraising campaign to ensure Helen Mary R remains safe, welcoming, and capable for the next generation of young people who need her.

Helen Mary R is a working Sail Training vessel. She is sailed hard, cared for carefully, and relied upon every season to deliver meaningful experiences for young people. At the same time, she provides purpose, belonging, and personal development for the volunteers and wider community who help keep her sailing.

As vessels age, essential systems reach the point where servicing is no longer optional. Sails wear out. Waterproofs fail. Interior spaces that host thousands of young people need care and renewal. These are not cosmetic issues; they directly affect safety, reliability, and the quality of the on-board experience.

Turning 40 gives us a clear and responsible moment to pause, assess, and invest. Not to preserve a boat for nostalgia’s sake, but to protect opportunity.

Supporting Helen Mary R at 40 does not simply fund a vessel. It protects:

  • Access to Sail Training for young people who may never otherwise go to sea
  • A safe, structured environment where challenge leads to growth
  • A volunteer-led organisation rooted in Cornwall and its maritime community
  • A unique community that brings together young people, volunteers, supporters, and marine professionals through shared purpose and experience
  • Opportunities for volunteers to develop skills, leadership, confidence, and lifelong friendships
  • A proven platform for confidence, resilience, teamwork, and leadership

Every improvement made to Helen Mary R directly improves the experience of the young people who sail her. It also strengthens the wider community that stands behind her. This campaign is about safeguarding impact, not preserving an asset.

Funds raised through this campaign will support essential work that keeps Helen Mary R fit for purpose as a Sail Training vessel, including:

Helen Mary R has reached 40 years because people have cared. Volunteers, marine professionals, supporters, families, and young people themselves have all played a part in keeping her sailing. Over time, she has become more than a vessel; she has become a place of connection, shared experience, mentorship, and belonging for a growing community built around Sail Training and the sea.

This campaign invites the next circle of stewardship.

By supporting Helen Mary R now, you become part of a living story; one that began long before Morvargh Sailing Project and will continue long after us. Your contribution helps ensure that future young people can step aboard unsure of themselves and step ashore changed. It also helps ensure that volunteers and supporters continue to find purpose, friendship, and community through their involvement with the vessel.

Helen Mary R is not slowing down. She is still sailing, still working, and still relied upon to deliver powerful, formative experiences.

Protecting her future means protecting access; access to challenge, to belonging, and to moments that quietly alter the course of a young person’s life.

At 40 years old, Helen Mary R remains exactly what she was built to be: a working Sail Training vessel, shaping futures and building community through shared endeavour and the power of the sea.
