Refits & Maintenance Volunteers

Helen Mary R is a working Sail Training vessel. She has sailed hard, been carefully cared for, and, year after year, relied upon to deliver safe, life-changing experiences for young people. Keeping her in good condition takes time, skill, and many hands.

Refit volunteers play a vital role in this work. Whether you can offer specialist skills or simply a willingness to help, your contribution directly supports young people by ensuring the vessel is safe, welcoming, and ready to sail.

Our refit work follows a predictable seasonal rhythm:

• October to January: weekend refit sessions, typically every other weekend
• February: a focused refit period ashore or afloat

This structure allows people to contribute when they can, whether that is one day, several weekends, or a longer stretch during the main refit period. There is no minimum time commitment. Every contribution helps.

We welcome volunteers with a wide range of practical skills, including but not limited to:

• Woodworking and joinery
• Marine or general engineering
• Painting and surface preparation
• Electrical work
• Mechanical maintenance
• Problem-solving and practical support

If you have other relevant skills or simply enjoy hands-on work and learning new things, we would still love to hear from you. Much of the refit work is done in teams, offering opportunities to learn from others.

Refit days are practical, sociable, and purposeful. Volunteers work alongside Morvargh’s core team and trusted local specialists to tackle a wide range of tasks.

Work is planned and supervised to ensure safety and effectiveness. We aim to create an environment where people feel useful, valued, and part of something bigger than the job at hand.

Tea, biscuits, conversation, and shared effort are all part of the experience!

Every improvement made during refit directly affects the quality of Sail Training we can deliver. Safe systems, reliable equipment, and well-maintained living spaces all contribute to a positive experience for young people.
